Oscar was a fourth-grader who began walking to the library each afternoon from his nearby elementary school.

He was from a very impoverished family that lacked the skills to help him success in school.

Each day as he did his school work at the library, he sought homework help, encouragement and advice from children’s and reference librarians.

At the end of the school year, he and a friend were chatting with librarians about the summer upcoming and the end-of-grade tests. “Before I starting coming to the library,” Oscar said, “I was making Ds. Now I’m making As and Bs.” That was five years ago; Oscar was inducted into the Beta Club in middle school and is now a successful high school freshman.

Libraries change lives!
